Cashew Plants

Cashew Plants

Cashew (Anacardium occidentale) is a tropical tree that produces the cashew nut, which is a popular and nutritious snack. It is native to northeastern Brazil but is now grown in many tropical regions around the world.

Characteristics of Cashew Plants

  1. Size and Growth Habit: Cashew trees are medium-sized evergreen trees that typically grow to 30-40 feet (9-12 meters) tall. They have a broad, spreading canopy and a somewhat irregular shape. The tree often has a gnarled or twisted trunk.

  2. Leaves: The leaves are large, glossy, and ovate to elliptical, with a leathery texture. They can be 4-8 inches (10-20 cm) long and vary in color from dark green to reddish when young.

  3. Flowers: Cashew trees produce small, fragrant flowers that are typically pink, white, or green. The flowers are grouped in dense clusters and bloom in the late spring to early summer.

  4. Fruit: The cashew fruit consists of two parts:

    • Cashew Apple: This is the swollen, fleshy, and edible part of the fruit, which is typically yellow or red. It is used in various culinary preparations and can be eaten fresh or processed into juices and preserves.
